Leaders will gather in Algeria for first Arab League summit in 2 years

(MENAFN) The first Arab League meeting since the COVID-19 epidemic is poised to begin in Algeria, but Political divides among the regional organization's members remain.

Arab governments are divided on matters ranging from Palestinian assistance to the regional responsibilities of Iran and Turkey, as well as the rehabilitation of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad, while Algeria's longstanding war with Morocco rages on.

Algeria, which had been mostly absent from Arab Politics for several years following the 2019 major uprisings that resulted in the toppling of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, has billed the conference as a sign of its return to front-line diplomacy.

“The summit shows that Algeria is back in international affairs after years of isolation due to Bouteflika’s illness, the protest movement, COVID-19 and the financial crisis,” a former Algerian government minister and the ambassador claimed.

Algiers assembled Palestinian groups this month in an effort to resolve years of internal strife, while President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has recently received the presidents of France and Italy.
