Ethiopia competitors prepare for South Africa peace discussions

(MENAFN) Representatives from the Ethiopian administration and Tigrayan rebel experts were preparing on Monday for peace meetings in South Africa for finding a peaceful remedy to the brutal two-year conflict.

The African Union-led talks have been flagged to begin on Monday, following an increase in fighting that has caused alarm in the world.

Kindeya Gebrehiwot, a spokesman for the rebel experts in Tigray, stated their delegation’s arrival in South Africa in a tweet shared on Sunday.

“Pressing: immediate cessation of hostilities, unfettered humanitarian access & withdrawal of Eritrean forces. There can’t be a military solution!” he also wrote.

Addis Ababa stated its delegation had left for South Africa on early Monday, noting: “The government of Ethiopia views the talks as an opportunity to peacefully resolve the conflict and consolidate the improvement of the situation on the ground.”

But it also stated its troops “have continued taking control of major urban centres in the past few days”, without classifying them.
