Doha: Mazen Hesham yesterday ended Adbulla Mohamed Al Tamimi's run at the CIB Egyptian Open with a thrilling 11-9, 11-4, 5-11, 11-8 win to reach the quarter-final in his home event.

Both the World No. 8 and the Qatar No.1 displayed their brilliant shot-making skills during the 43-minute-long contest in which the Cairo-born 28-year-old took a 2-0 lead early in the match.

Hesham took the first game 11-9 and doubled his lead with an 11-4 win in the second before Qatar's World No. 43 Al Tamimi fought back with an impressive 11-5 mark in the third game.

However, Al Tamimi was unable to apply enough pressure in the fourth game as Hesham sealed the win in 11-8 to book a last-eight meeting against his fellow countryman - World No. 3 Mostafa Asal.

Asal beat compatriot Mohamed ElSherbini in a routine 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-4) win.

“I think he started to play better in the third game, he looked a bit sleepy, maybe the two hard matches he played the two previous days, I thought he was not himself in the first two as he can play much better than that,” Hesham said after yesterday's win over Al Tamimi.

“I was trying to make sure he wouldn't wake up, to keep containing him and take the time away from him. But in the third, maybe I became a bit too lazy, or I slept a little bit on my game as well, he started attacking and getting into it,” he said.

Earlier yesterday, Egypt's unseeded World No. 11 Fares Dessouky shocked England's No.4 seed Mohamed ElShorbagy in a five-game thriller to advance to the quarter-finals 3-2: 11-6, 11-8, 4-11, 4-11, 11-9. Meanwhile, Diego Elias and Tarek Momen also avoided upsets against Declan James and Gregoire Marche, respectively, to reach the quarter-finals.

World No. 6 Momen beat Frenchman Marche 3-0 (15-13, 11-5, 12-10) in 52 minutes while Peru's Elias swept aside England's James in 34 minutes (3-0: 11-6, 11-4, 11-9).
