6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Kuril Islands

Moscow: An earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale hit off Shikotan island of the Kuril Islands located in the Far East of Russia.

According to the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GS RAS), the earthquake epicenter was located 117 km to the east of the town of Malokuril'skoe on Shikotan Island, at a depth of 25 km.

Casualties or material damage have not been reported yet.

Earthquakes regularly strike different parts of the Pacific belt, including the Kuril Islands, due to their presence on areas where many tectonic plates meet, which causes frequent volcanic and seismic activity.
