FAO hails $65m ADB contribution to Afghanistan

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations has hailed a $65 million contribution from the Asian Development bank (ADB) to Afghanistan.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) hoped the grant would boost food security and support livelihoods in the conflict-devastated country.

In a statement on its website, organisation said:“The ADB support represents a significant contribution to FAO's 200-million-dollar crisis response programme for 2022 …“

The programme seeks to raise local food production, protect livestock, increase rural incomes and improve the food security of poor and vulnerable people across the country.

The FAO statement said:“The project seeks to reach all of Afghanistan's 34 provinces, with special emphasis on the major wheat and livestock producing provinces.”

FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu thanked ADB for ts generous contribution, which recognised the urgent need to invest in livelihood assistance in rural Afghanistan.
