Qatar - QRCS opens handicraft centre for addiction survivors in Kenya


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: A high-profile delegation of Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) recently visited Kenya to strengthen ties with Kenya Red Cross and open a new training centre for addiction survivors under a project to construct and furnish the centre in Lamu Island, eastern Kenya.

The delegation consisted of Ali bin Hassan Al Hammadi, Secretary-General, Faisal Mohamed Al Emadi, Executive Director of Relief and International Development Division, and Dr. Fawzi Oussedik, Head of International Relations and International Humanitarian Law.

In the presence of the Minister of Finance, the delegation opened the Innovation Centre for Addict Rehabilitation, first launched three years ago. The visitors took a tour of the centre to watch the handicraft and vocational training given to the inmates as part of the activities to help the survivors to restore normal life.

Handed over to the local authorities, the centre was constructed and furnished by QRCS at a total cost of $1m.

It is a rehabilitation centre that serves families in Lamu, majority of its inhabitants are Muslims. 

Some special rehabilitation services will be provided to young men facing social and family issues due to addiction.

Among the services provided at the centre are psychological and health rehabilitation and vocational training to creating job opportunities for a decent life.
