Nigeria: 14 shooters killed by police in Benue state

(MENAFN) Early on Sunday, Jun. 20 a number of 14 shooters were killed by Nigerian Police after halting their attempted assault on a police station in central Nigeria's Benue state, according to police.

A group of around 50 shooters conducted an assault in early hours of Sunday on a police station at Katsina-Ala town of the state, in an attempt to release some alleged bandits who were detained by police on Saturday and arrested in the station, reported Catherine Anene, a spokeswoman for Benue police.

The spokeswoman stated: "operatives at the police division, who were already on alert, engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle," further saying that 14 of the shooters were shot dead at the end of the gun battle whereas others managed to run away with bullet injuries.

Anene noted police operatives are searching for the fleeing shooters, and called on local residents to help the police with helpful information.
