US Imposes Sanctions on Iran Defense Ministry

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) United States on Monday imposed sanctions on Iran's Defense Ministry and over others involved in supporting nuke and weapons programs.

Reports indicate Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is also sanctioned for deepening ties with Caracas and Iran.

'No matter who you are, if you violate the U.N. arms embargo on Iran, you risk sanctions,' Pompeo said.

On Saturday, the United States unilaterally re-imposed UN sanctions on Tehran, which UN Security Council members have previously said Washington does not have the authority to execute.

'If U.N. member states fail to fulfill their obligations to implement these sanctions, the United States is prepared to use our domestic authorities to impose consequences for those failures and ensure that Iran does not reap the benefits of U.N. prohibited activity,' Pompeo said in a Saturday evening statement.

Iranian oil minister Bijan Zanganeh in response said the United States is waging a war by sanctioning Iran's crude (oil) exports.

The US is reportedly trying to turn back UN sanctions on Iran. Last month, Pompeo asserted that the US will enforce sanctions despite the UN Security Council vote to not extend sanctions on Iran's arm embargo.
