(MENAFN- Khaama Press) In the sideline of a meeting
in Davos, US President Donald Trump reiterated to his Afghan counterpart,
Ashraf Ghani, on Wednesday that he wants to see a significant drop in violence
by the Taliban fighters before the peace negotiations reach to a final
agreement.
The White House said,
'President Trump emphasizes on the need for a lasting reduction in violence by
the Taliban that would facilitate meaningful negotiations on Afghanistan peace
and reconsolidation.'
A reduction in
violence is the key priority and a condition for a smooth transition to the
peace deal and the agreement that would lead US forces to leave Afghanistan.
Although insurgent sources
said last week, they had offered to initiate a brief ceasefire of seven to 18
days, but there was no announcement of the proposal by either party or
spokesperson.
To win the final
approval from the Trump, one of the pillars of the peace agreement with the
Taliban is that insurgent groups should not offer sanctuary to jihadists who
would operate against the interests of the US government or disturb the peace
process.
Meanwhile, ordinary
Afghans are optimistic about the outcomes of the peace deal with the Taliban as
they have been experiencing a relatively low reduction in the level of violence
by insurgent groups over the last couple of days.
