Tunisia officially confirms Saied, Karoui to contest in election 2nd round

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TUNIS, Sept 16 (KUNA) -- The Tunisian electoral commission confirmed on Tuesday that the elections' initial results showed that candidates Kais Saied and Nabil Karoui would contest in the second round of the polling.
Nabil Baffoun, the head of the Independent higher electoral commission, said at a news conference that Saied garnered 620,000 and 711 votes, 81.4 percent of the total votes, while Karoui of "Tunisia Heart Party" bagged 535,000 and 517 votes, 15.6 percent.
He indicated that the election results would be contested on September 18 and 19, then the judiciary would decide when the second round of the polling would be held, speculating that it might be either on September 29, the sixth or 13th of October.
As whether Karoui is legally entitled to run in the elections while he is held behind iron bars, Baffoun said the Tunisian laws allow candidacy of jailed citizens as long as they have not been handed final verdicts exceeding 10 years behind bars.
Proportion of the voting, held on Sunday, amounted to 45.02 of the electorate in Tunisia and 19.7 abroad. (end)
