GEORGETOWN, Guyana — According to a press release from the Guyana finance ministry on Tuesday, the Kuwait Fund for Development has approved GY$344 million (US$ grant for a feasibility study for the redesign of a 27- village road network.
The release said that residents from more than 'twenty-seven villages along Belfield to Rosignol can look forward to improved road access and connectivity because the ministry of public infrastructure (MOPI) will now be able to start 'a technical and economic feasibility study for the redesign of the road network.'
'The Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana has received a Grant of Kuwaiti Dinars (KD) 500,000 from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development to undertake a Technical and Economic Feasibility Study for the Redesign of the Belfield to Rosignol Road Network.'
The sum of 500,000 Kuwaiti Dinars is about US$1.6 million.
According to the release, 'The study seeks to solve the issues of deteriorating roads, poor drainage and road safety from Belfield to Rosignol. The redesign of network will ensure enhanced capacity of the roads, strengthen trade and economic development and facilitate new and improved interactions among farming communities. It will also reduce delays and increase user satisfaction.'
The Kuwait Fund, one of Guyana's development partners, has over the years assisted Guyana to undertake feasibility studies and designs for the upgrade of road networks within the country the ministry said.
A similar project was undertaken in 2011 for the upgrade of the Better Hope to Belfield road network, according to the finance ministry of Guyana.
Through the hard and steady work of Guyana's ambassador to Kuwait, Dr Shamir Ally, and a ministerial visit by finance minister Winston Jordan, and public infrastructure, David Patterson, this grant became a reality.
Meanwhile, Guyana and Kuwait will soon sign a visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic passports.
According to the Kuwait Fund, it offers loans on concessionary term to finance development projects in developing countries. The Fund also provides technical assistance to finance the costs of the feasibility studies of projects, as well as the training of nationals of the borrowing countries.
'Today, the Kuwait Fund forms a solid bridge of friendship and solidarity between the state of Kuwait and the developing nations.'
Dr Ally said, 'Guyana is highly appreciative of this grant from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) which is the beginning of much more assistances to follow. Kuwaiti officials indicated repeatedly that Guyana is a ‘brother and sister' to Kuwait. During the September 2018 visit to Kuwait by minister of finance and minister of public infrastructure at meetings with Kuwaiti officials, ruling families and Guyana ambassador to Kuwait, received assurances from Kuwaitis of continuing support for the Guyana embassy in Kuwait City and its operations and further assistances in due course.'
'With more support from Guyana MoFA to the resident ambassador in Kuwait, much more will be achieved for Guyana and Guyanese,' Ally said.
