Bangladesh: 2 die in gunfights ahead of election

(MENAFN) Police declared that two campaign staff members have died as many more were wounded in Political gunfights in Bangladesh, as concerns were raised before a general election on December 30.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of the ruling Awami League Party is trying to run a third straight term as official election campaigning were ongoing on Monday.

Her old rival, Khaleda Zia, who heads the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has been imprisoned after she was found guilty on charges she claims were politically motivated.

The BNP refused the last election, in 2014, as unfair, however has confirmed it will participate this time, though it is aiming at international monitors of polls it believes will be flawed.
