US, Turkey discussions on Iranian sanctions begin

(MENAFN) Officials from Turkey and the US have begun talks on the upcoming US sanctions against Iran, seeing that Turkey is one of the key importers of Iranian oil.

The two-day meeting has taken place with the participation of US Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing Marshall Billingslea, treasury and central bank officials, along with Turkish firms with businesses with Iran.

Citing the US official, Anadolu Agency reported "what we discussed with Turkish government are potential implications for Turkish companies and Turkish economy to take different measures."

The forthcoming sanctions on Iran are considered of importance for Turkey, the Turkish Foreign Ministry stressed.

The ministry stated "our relevant authorities are carrying out necessary work for Turkey not to be negatively impacted by the upcoming sanctions. In this regard, we are holding consultations with our American counterparts."

It added "Iran is an important neighbour for Turkey, in view of both our bilateral economic and commercial relations as well as our energy imports. Therefore, we will continue to monitor U.S. sanctions within this framework."
