Trump says Syria humanitarian disgrace

(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Feb 23 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump on Friday strongly condemned Russia and Iran for their support to the Syrian regime in the ongoing conflict.

"What Russia and what Iran and what Syria have done recently is a humanitarian disgrace," he said at a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnball.

"What those three countries have done to people over the last short period of time is a disgrace," Trump affirmed.

On the US role in Syria, he said, "We're there for one reason: We're there to get (IS) and get rid of (IS) and go home. We're not there for any other reason. And we've largely accomplished our goal." For his part, Turnball said "it'd be fair to say that, ultimately, the resolution in Syria has to be a political settlement.

"Ultimately, there has to be a political settlement. The campaign to destroy Daesh or (IS) has been largely completed. Their terror -- the so-called caliphate has been reduced down to a few pockets," he added.

"This was a very important part of our global effort. But ultimately, the settlement in that region has to come from a political settlement among the people who live there," he stressed. (end) si.gb
