GCC Marks 10-Year Anniversary Of Human Rights Declaration In Doha

DOHA, Dec 10 (KUNA) -- Gulf Cooperation Council marked Tuesday the 10th anniversary of the Human Rights declaration in the Qatari capital in attendance of Kuwaiti Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Sabah.
Qatari Minister of State for International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maryam Al-Misnad, dubbed the declaration a turning point in all gulf nations as it affirmed common humanitarian values, became a cornerstone to work of council.
She mentioned that gulf nations all exerted efforts to boost cooperation in humanitarian matters through initiatives empowering women, promoting children's rights and persons with disabilities, as well as combatting human trafficking.
She stated that the 10 year anniversary is chance to reiterate commitment to protecting human rights, and ensuring that dignity and high humanitarian values remain the basis on which region's future is built.
As for GCC Secretary General Jassim Al-Budaiwi, he called the declaration an extension of values of the gulf region, and an integral part of its religious cultural and social identity.
Enforcing human rights is faced with many challenges and double standards, Al-Budaiwi affirmed, citing the violations of Israeli occupation against Palestinian people and calling it a blatant breach of basic human rights, as well as the rise in conflicts and spread of hatred and islamophobia.
He reaffirmed Gulf States commitment to protecting human rights as it is essential to building a fairer, safer and more sustainable future.
As for Qatari Human rights official at the Foreign Ministry, Dr. Reem Al-Derham, she recalled the tangible progress made in supporting refugees, and those afflicted by wars and armed conflicts, saying that Qatar had given assistance to all factions of society. (end)
