The iconic red sequined shoes worn by American actress Judy
Garland in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz have been sold for a
record $28 million, according to Azernews .
The shoes were auctioned in Dallas this past November, with a
preliminary estimated value of around $3 million. Multiple bidders
participated in the auction, but the winning bid came from an
anonymous buyer. These shoes are one of several pairs worn by
Garland as Dorothy in the beloved film.
Interestingly, this particular pair of shoes was stolen in 2005
from the Judy Garland Museum in her hometown of Grand Rapids,
Minnesota. After being missing for over a decade, they were
recovered in 2018. The shoes were originally lent to the museum by
Michael Shaw, the former owner, before they were sold.
The sale marks not only a new record for movie memorabilia but
also highlights the enduring cultural significance of The Wizard of
Oz and its legacy in the world of Hollywood. Fans and collectors
alike continue to be captivated by the magic of Dorothy's iconic
footwear, further elevating its value as a symbol of cinematic
history.
