African defense ministers gather to talk about increasing tensions

(MENAFN) African defense ministers are gathering in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for a crucial conference focused on security and peace, set against a backdrop of escalating conflicts across the continent. This three-day event, organized by the Ethiopian Ministry of Defense, began on Tuesday and includes participation from representatives of regional organizations, senior military officials, military attachés based in Addis Ababa, and military affairs researchers, as reported by the state-run Ethiopian News Agency.

In her opening address, Ethiopia's defense chief, Aisha Mohammed Mussa, highlighted the growing complexity of Africa's security landscape. She remarked, “We are acutely aware of the many security challenges that confront our continent, from the threat of terrorism and insurgencies to the rise of organized crime and human trafficking.” Mussa emphasized the necessity for unity among African nations, asserting that cooperative security partnerships among defense forces are vital for achieving lasting peace and enhancing global security.

The summit is particularly timely as tensions rise in the Horn of Africa. Ethiopia has been involved in a contentious situation with neighboring Somalia since the start of the year. This unrest follows Addis Ababa's controversial agreement with the breakaway region of Somaliland to lease a stretch of coastline, allowing landlocked Ethiopia access to the Red Sea and the opportunity to establish a marine base. This agreement is believed to be tied to the potential recognition of Somaliland’s independence, further complicating the geopolitical dynamics in the region.

As the conference unfolds, the discussions are expected to address the multifaceted security threats facing African nations, fostering collaboration among military leaders to tackle challenges that could undermine stability and peace across the continent.
