Russian-manufactured Indian war-vessel participates in Navy Day festival

(MENAFN) During the Navy Day celebrations in St. Petersburg on Sunday, the Indian Navy’s multi-role frigate INS Tabar was prominently featured and received a warm welcome from Russian President Vladimir Putin. The frigate, part of the Talwar-class series, was built in St. Petersburg’s Baltic Shipyard and commissioned into the Indian Navy in 2004.

The INS Tabar, stationed in Mumbai, is a versatile combat vessel capable of high-speed operations, exceeding 30 knots (over 55 km/h). It is equipped for a wide range of missions, including engagements with surface ships, submarines, and aerial threats. Its presence at the Navy Day parade underscores the deepening maritime cooperation between India and Russia.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), an Indian Navy spokesperson highlighted that the visit of INS Tabar to Russia "further strengthens maritime cooperation between the two nations," emphasizing the interoperability and strategic alignment of their naval forces.

Commanded by Captain M. R. Harish, the frigate’s crew numbers 280. The vessel’s voyage to Russia also included significant stops in Egypt and Morocco, showcasing its operational versatility. Before arriving in St. Petersburg, INS Tabar visited Hamburg, Germany, where it engaged in professional exchanges with the German Navy and welcomed public visitors, enhancing international maritime relations.

Looking ahead, INS Tabar is expected to participate in the INDRA-24 naval exercises alongside the Russian navy. This participation reflects the ongoing and robust defense partnership between India and Russia, which has included the construction and supply of advanced warships and submarines.

The relationship between the two nations has faced some challenges, including delays in the delivery of additional Russian-built warships to the Indian Navy due to sanctions related to the conflict in Ukraine. However, India is anticipated to receive these ships in the coming months, further cementing the defense ties between the two countries.
