Slovakia Premier unveils boycott of ‘degenerate’ Olympics

(MENAFN) Slovakia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Tomas Taraba, has announced his decision to boycott the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, citing profound dissatisfaction with the event's portrayal of Christian themes during the opening ceremony. Taraba criticized the olympics as a display of "degenerate decadence" that misused the platform of Sport for what he described as "progressive Political theater."

In a facebook post, Taraba expressed his disapproval of the opening ceremony, which he claimed was disrespectful to Christians. He stated, “For the normal world, this Olympics will forever remain a symbol of degenerate decadence, which abused the beauty of sport and turned it into progressive political theater.” His comments reflected widespread discontent among some Christian groups who felt the opening ceremony was an affront to their values.

The controversy centers around the ceremony’s depiction of Leonardo da Vinci’s renowned artwork, *The Last Supper*. According to critics, the reimagining of this sacred scene involved elements they found highly offensive, including representations of drag queens, homosexuals, and transsexuals, which they argue was a disrespectful departure from the original religious significance.

Taraba also pointed out that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has begun to remove footage of the opening ceremony from the internet in response to the backlash. He accused the IOC of trying to suppress criticism by deleting the "disgraceful" content, which he believes has deeply offended many who distinguish between high culture and what he views as inappropriate portrayals.

The deputy prime minister's boycott decision comes at a time when Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, had been recovering from a serious assassination attempt in May, during which Taraba had temporarily assumed some of Fico’s duties. With Fico’s return to office, Taraba’s boycott represents a significant gesture of protest against what he perceives as a cultural and moral failing of the Olympic Games' organizers.
