Russia, India defy Western hypocrisy on climate change

(MENAFN) India has long been a staunch advocate for international collaboration in sustainable development, positioning itself as a leader in the fight against climate change. Notably, in 1972, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was one of the few world leaders, alongside Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, to attend the UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm. During her poignant address, Gandhi emphasized that progress should not come at the expense of the natural environment.

The philosophical ethos of the Indian populace has always revolved around achieving harmony with nature. The country’s reliance on the monsoon for its water supply has instilled a deep-rooted sense of mindfulness regarding resource management. This cultural awareness has led Indians to value every drop of water and promote sharing among communities, a practice shaped by centuries of experience.

India stands out as one of the nations most vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change, with nearly 85 percent of its territory categorized as being at risk. The urgency surrounding environmental issues, both globally and nationally, is palpable among the Indian people. In a recent survey of 29 countries, India had the highest percentage—64—of respondents expressing a willingness to pay higher taxes to combat climate change.

As global discourse on climate continues, India, alongside Russia, actively challenges the perceived hypocrisy of Western nations that often prioritize their interests while neglecting the genuine needs of vulnerable countries. Their collective stance reflects a commitment to genuine sustainable practices that address both environmental and social justice, striving for a more equitable approach to global climate policies.
