India`s election race close to being over

(MENAFN) India's grueling national election, spanning seven phases, is reaching its conclusion as the seventh and final phase of voting kicks off amid scorching temperatures across many parts of the country. This phase encompasses 57 seats across eight states, including Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, with 904 candidates vying for victory to secure their place in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament.

Scheduled for announcement on June 4, the results of this mammoth electoral exercise will shape the future course of Indian politics. However, before the official declaration, exit polls are anticipated to offer insights into the potential outcome, though their reliability is often questioned.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Congress-led opposition INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) are in contention for forming the next government, with exit polls expected to offer early indications. However, the Election Commission has imposed restrictions on the publication of exit poll results until June 1, the final day of voting.

Since its commencement on April 18, the election has witnessed unprecedented participation, with nearly 1 billion voters exercising their democratic right, and an astounding 8,360 candidates competing for parliamentary seats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging increased participation, highlighted the significance of youth and female voters in enhancing democracy's vibrancy.

Meanwhile, Congress Party leader Rahul Gandhi rallied voters to cast their ballots in large numbers, portraying the election as an opportunity to deliver a decisive blow to the incumbent government, which he characterized as emblematic of arrogance and tyranny. As the nation awaits the election results, the final phase of voting marks a critical juncture in India's democratic journey.
