Macron requests that Canadian Premier relax sanctions on Russian titanium

(MENAFN) In a diplomatic move aimed at protecting the aerospace industry, French President Emmanuel macron requested that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau relax sanctions on Russian titanium. According to sources cited by Reuters, Macron's plea was specifically to benefit Airbus and other aerospace firms reliant on titanium supplies from Russian manufacturer VSMPO-AVISMA, the world’s leading producer of processed titanium.

The request came after Canada diverged from its allies by banning titanium imports from VSMPO-AVISMA as part of its sanctions package against Moscow in February. Titanium's critical role in aerospace, due to its high strength-to-weight ratio, makes it indispensable for aircraft engines and landing gear.

Reuters sources revealed that Macron's appeal was made during a phone call in March. A source close to the French leader disclosed that significant efforts were undertaken to persuade Trudeau, involving extensive diplomatic and industrial lobbying. Another European government reportedly supported this lobbying initiative.

Initially, Ottawa resisted the pressure but eventually granted waivers to Airbus and several other aerospace firms based in Europe. A Canadian source indicated that persistent advocacy from the French government was pivotal in this decision. Without continuous pressure from France, Canada might have maintained its firm stance on the sanctions.

While the exact expiration of these waivers remains unspecified, industry sources informed Reuters that the exemptions are expected to last for three years. This development highlights the intricate balance between enforcing sanctions and maintaining critical industrial supply chains amid geopolitical tensions.
