Kazakhstan Aims To Build New Water Reservoirs


(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) ASTANA, Kazakhstan, April 25. Around 20 newwater reservoirs will be built in Kazakhstan, Kazakh PresidentKassym-Jomart Tokayev said during his speech at the XXXIII sessionof the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan with the agenda 'Unity. Progress', Trend reports.

“Almost all dams and reservoirs in our country were built backin the 50-70s of the last century. Due to the lack of modernregulating water management facilities, the current floods turnedout to be much more large-scale in their consequences than theycould be. Therefore, in 11 regions of Kazakhstan, 20 new and 15existing reservoirs will be built, which will significantly reducethe risk of flooding 134 settlements,” he noted.

According to him, measures to prevent and reduce theconsequences of floods, taking into account international bestpractices, will be added to the concept of the development of waterresources management.

To note, floods started in Kazakhstan in March. A state ofemergency was declared in eight regions of the country at the locallevel. As a result of the floods, thousands of houses remainedunderwater, and over 119,000 people were evacuated. Tens ofthousands of people were involved in rescue work.
