Sudan Army Repel Rsf Attack On Armored Corps

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KHARTOUM, Aug 21 (KUNA) -- The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) renewed their attacks on the headquarters of the armored corps to the south of Khartoum on Monday morning but the Sudanese army claimed that they were able to repel the attack.
The site has been besieged by the RSF over the past weeks, according to witnesses.
The Sudanese army used warplanes of the Air Force to repel the attackers and foil another bid to take hold of the headquarters of the armored corps, according to a military statement.
The air strikes inflicted scores of casualties among the RSF fighters and destroyed five of their armored vehicles, a tank and two vehicles, the statement noted.
In Nyala city, capital of South Darfur state, southwest Sudan, the raging battles forced thousands of civilians to flee to safer areas, witnesses told KUNA.
Commander of the 16th infantry brigade Maj.-Gen. Staff Yasser Fadhlallah was martyred while discharging "his sacred duty to defend the homeland," a military statement said.
Deadly clashes between the belligerent forces were also reported in other parts of Sudan, notably El-Obeid city, the capital of the central state of North Kurdufan.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry called on the international community to designate the RSF as a terrorist group, accusing the repel forces of committing crimes against humanity.
The RSF use civilians as human shields, recruit dozens of children in their offensive and practice sex violence against civilians, according to a statement from the ministry. (end)
Since the outbreak of the conflict on April 15, more than 3,000 people, mainly civilians have been killed and 6,000 others injured, in addition to three million refugees and internally displaced people. (end)
