Senate Head Urges Closer Ties With Italy

Amman, July 10 (Petra) -- Senate President Faisal Fayez said Monday Jordan and Italy maintained close relations, urging stronger cooperation in various fields.
He spoke at a meeting with an Italian parliamentary team headed by president of the Senate Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Stephania Craxi, to discuss bilateral relations and current international and regional developments.
Fayez called for building on the already solid Jordanian-Italian relations, pointing to available opportunities to enhance economic, Political and parliamentary exchanges and expand cooperation in tourism, culture and investment.
The head of the Senate noted Italy's support of His Majesty King Abdullah's efforts to bring about a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East and settle the Palestinian issue on the basis of the two-state solution and international legitimacy resolutions, as the only path to achieve peace as a strategic choice and a necessity for regional and international security.
Fayez lauded Rome's support of the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, and its emphasis on preserving the legal and historical status quo in the city.
King Abdullah advocates for ending all crises in the region and the world through political channels and responsible dialogue away from violence, killing and destruction, said Fayez.
Jordan maintains a policy based on moderation, maximizing common denominators among peoples, rejecting hate speech and extremism, combating racism and believing in peoples' right to freedom and independence and to live in security and stability, he told the delegation.
For her part, Craxi noted Jordan's pivotal role in ending conflicts in the region and restoring security and stability to it, as well as the Kingdom's efforts towards refugees.
She said Italy is interested to work with Jordan to build economic partnerships with Jordan, overcome regional challenges and achieve peace in the region and Mediterranean countries, stressing the need to solve the Palestinian issue in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
