South African Embassy Celebrates National Day

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN - The South African embassy in Amman on Wednesday evening celebrated its country's national day, known as Freedom Day.

The event gathered ministers, officials, ambassadors, members of the business community and journalists.

South Africa's Ambassador to Jordan Ebrahim Saley said that the citizens of South Africa, which became a free country in 1994, always appreciated the solidarity and support provided from countries like Jordan to end the immoral apartheid regime in South Africa, which the UN declared a crime against humanity in 1966, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Jordan established diplomatic relations with South Africa in 1994 after the defeat of the apartheid regime and the emergence of a new, non-racist democratic South Africa, Saley added, expressing gratitude for the Kingdom's support for the liberation of his country.

The diplomat noted that the relations between South Africa and Jordan continues to grow through agreements and projects that benefit both countries, referring to a recent agreement on political consultations at the ministerial level.

Saley pointed out that South Africa is an active and consistent participant in the "Aqaba Process", which was launched by His Majesty King Abdullah to join hands with other countries in combating terrorism.

On ties and trade, the envoy noted that South Africa and Jordan have a "close" relationship, highlighting the policy of a 30-day entry visa issued to holders of Jordanian and South African passports at each respective country.

Despite being relatively "modest", trade exchange between the two nations continues to grow every year, with the latest figure showing that the volume of trade exchange amounted to 1.4 billion rand, or around JD52.2 million, he added.

Attending the ceremony, Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs Wajih Azaizeh commended the existing partnership between Jordan and South Africa, voicing the country's keenness to boost relations and expand cooperation in various fields.
