Laundress Brand Fabric Conditioners Recalled Due to Possible Carcinogen Contamination

(MENAFN) The Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall notice for another batch of Laundress brand fabric conditioners due to the possibility of harmful carcinogen contamination. The recall covers various sizes of The Laundress New York fabric conditioners with white labeling on the front, including 15 milliliter, two ounce, 16 ounce, 33 ounce, one pound, and one-gallon bottles. The products may contain ethylene oxide, which is a chemical commonly used in factory settings to make adhesives, antifreeze, detergents, and textiles. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, direct and prolonged exposure to ethylene oxide can cause vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, trouble breathing, and eye and skin burns.

The recalled fabric conditioners were sold online and in stores, including Bloomingdale's, Brooklinen, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Target, and have been available for purchase between 2011 and November 2022 for prices ranging from USD1 to USD20. Approximately 800,000 bottles were sold in the United States, and 13,000 bottles were sold in Canada.

The Laundress is a subsidiary of Unilever, a New Jersey-based company that sells household cleaning products and other items. Customers who purchased the recalled product should stop using it immediately and contact The Laundress for a full refund. There have been no reported injuries or illnesses associated with the use of these products, according to the CPSC.

This recall is separate from a previous 2022 recall of Laundress products. The brand discovered different types of bacteria when testing some of its products in December, including Burkholderia cepacia complex, Klebsiella aerogenes, and different species of Pseudomonas. In November, the company posted a notice urging customers to stop using its products entirely. Burkholderia cepacia complex is a group of bacteria commonly found in soil and water that are often resistant to common antibiotics but pose little medical risk to healthy individuals. However, those with weakened immune systems or chronic lung disease are more susceptible to infection from the bacteria, according to the CDC.
