UN: 78 Million Boys And Girls Deprived Of Attending School

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says that 222 million boys and girls have been adversely affected by conflict, economic challenges, and natural disasters, out of which 78 million have been deprived of attending schools and educational institutions.

Guterres on Friday said on twitter that conflicts, economic issues, and natural disasters in the world have negatively affected the lives of millions of boys and girls, out of which 78 million have been barred from going to school.

During a call for help, Mr. Guterres said that no one should be deprived of educational opportunities, and the international community should duly support this cause under all circumstances.

This comes as the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, particularly for women has deteriorated over the past months. Since the Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada issued a number of decrees, restricting the rights of women to education and work, no single girl or woman can attend educational institutions in Afghanistan.

As per the findings of The
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ( UNESCO), the number of female students in Afghanistan in 2001 was zero, whereas, it increased to 2.5 million in 2018 – a considerable rise in the number of school girls who attended schools at different levels.

Currently, 80 percent of eligible school girls which totals 2.5 million have been restricted from attending schools, and 30 percent of girls in Afghanistan have never had a chance to get primary education.

The UN, aid organizations, and the international community criticized the latest decision and called on the Taliban regime to lift the gender-based bans and allow Afghan women and girls to attend education, work, and return to public life.

However, the de facto authorities of Afghanistan emphasize creating a pure Islamic environment before removing the bans and calling on the international community to respect Islamic values, and not interfere in the internal affairs of Afghanistan.
