NEILI (Pajhwok): Residents of central Daikundi province say winter education courses in villages are being launched at students' expense.
The courses, which are initiated at the beginning of the winter, end along with the season.
Nek Mohammad Hamidi, a teacher, told Pajhwok Afghan News such classes were arranged every winter in mosques, where girls and boys were charged fees, regardless of age.
One or two such courses were arranged in every village, enabling boys and girls to attend lessons during the cold season, Hamidi explained.
Every winter, parents gather and hire one or two experienced teachers to teach their children different subjects, including the Quran and other books.
Sadiq Mohammadi, another teacher from Miramor district, said he taught students up to 12th grade all subjects.
“The people of Daikundi are very poor. Children have to work alongside their parents to earn a living,” Mohammadi commented.
Faizullah, a winter course participant, believed such classes had been effective in preparing students for admission to higher grades in spring. During the winter, they can pursue their studies and work.
“It becomes hard to study science subjects and work at a time. Therefore, we study these subjects in the winter,” he added.
However, the hajj and religious affairs director said all scholars taught the Quran and other Islamic subjects in winter courses.
