AMMAN - The Ministry of Agriculture said that 1,478 out of 92,000 head of cattle are infected with foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Jordan.

In a statement made available to The Jordan Times, the ministry has confirmed that it is following up on FMD cases by continually monitoring cattle to prevent any possible complications.

The statement added that epidemiological investigations are underway, and samples from infected farms will be transferred to animal and veterinary laboratories.

“The number of infected farms has reached 56 since FMD cases first started to appear in Jordan in late 2022, and the infection statuses were immediately shared with the ministry,” the statement said.

The total number of cows in the aforementioned farms stands at 14,456.

As part of the ministry's first national FMD vaccination campaign that took place during the fourth quarter of 2022, four million head of cattle have been vaccinated against FMD.

Agriculture Ministry Spokesperson Lawrence Majali told The Jordan Times that“the ministry has taken all necessary measures to ensure the safety of all head of cattle, as well as to mitigate chances of infecting other cattle”, pointing out that“current conditions are under control and are not classified as an FMD outbreak”.

The ministry has also said that infection rates are normal when compared with global ratios, and“it will not impact the Kingdom's milk yield”.
