US forces are stationed near Russian border

(MENAFN) A US infantry unit landed in Estonia this week as part of NATO's push to strengthen the military bloc's eastern border with Russia, according to the Baltic country's defense minister.

According to a statement posted on the ministry's website on Friday, US service soldiers are stationed at the Taara facility in Voru, around 20 kilometers from the Russian border.

Colonel Mati Tikerpuu, commander of the Estonian Defense Forces' 2nd Infantry Brigade, commented on the arrival of US military troops, saying he hopes to be able to "integrate our friends on a brigade level and acquire an extra mobility unit."

Colonel Richard Ikena, US 1st Infantry Division Artillery Commander, stated that American troops are “excited to be in Estonia” and “look forward to working shoulder-to-shoulder, alongside our Allies.”

According to the statement, Washington will also send a HIMARS platoon to Estonia, along with accompanying control and command equipment and systems. According to Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur, this would allow Estonian troops to "learn the ropes" of operating multiple launch rocket systems before receiving their own HIMARS units in 2025.
