France convicts eight people in connection with Nice incident

(MENAFN) Seven men and one woman were sentenced to jail terms ranging from two to 18 years for their roles in the July 2016 terrorist attack in Nice. On Tuesday, a special court in Paris decided that Tunisian and Albanian nationals were involved with or given weapons to Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, who drove a truck into a throng of people enjoying Bastille Day.

Mohamed Ghraieb and Chokri Chafroud were both sentenced to 18 years in jail for their involvement with a terrorist organization. Ramzi Arefa, the third defendant, was sentenced to 12 years in prison and barred from possessing or transporting guns for 15 years.

Other individuals accused with firearms trafficking and criminal conspiracy received jail sentences ranging from two to eight years. Artan Henaj, Enkeledja Zace, and Maskim Celaj were named by French media, and two of them were also permanently barred from visiting France.

Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, 31, had driven a tractor-trailer for nearly 2 kilometers down the Promenade des Anglais, aiming for the 30,000 people who had congregated to witness the July 14 fireworks. The assault came to a stop when he was tragically shot by cops. 15 children were among the 86 killed and 458 wounded.
