Trinidad And Tobago Succumbs To Fake News

(MENAFN- Caribbean News Global)

Dear Sir

The mid-morning rumours that prime minister Dr Keith Rowley had fired Fitzgerald Ethelbert Hinds, the worst minister of national security in the country's history, became the source of the national conversation since it was splashed across the internet and social media.

Now that the country has learnt that it was fake news and not true, it begs the question … who created it and why was it so widely circulated?

Were these rumours deliberately designed by the People's National Movement (PNM) to manipulate the national conversation?

In the past, the PNM mastered and perfected the art of political distraction and changing the national conversation. They were able to infiltrate and undermined everything. And with these distractions, the PNM had grown accustomed to gaining exceptional control over the population with these“messages.”

They did it with great success in the past to influence their political agendas and to intentionally stir up the national conversation – and distract people from the very important issues and challenges that they are facing. But times have changed!

The administration is indeed feeling the intense political heat with its lack of response to the worst flooding that has hit the country and which has shown up the crumbling infrastructure that is a result of their failure to effect proper or rather any type of regular and preventative maintenance to the country's infrastructure.

Even more, pressure is being placed on the administration on the spiralling out-of-control murder rate and their impotence in curbing this epidemic. The murder rate, up to the end of November has surpassed the record number of 550 which happened under the Patrick Manning-led PNM administration of 2008.

While the damage to property and infrastructure from the flooding remains as it was yesterday, as well as the murder rate climbing, was the Keith Rowley-led PNM, once again attempting to change the national conversation?

Assuming that it was indeed operatives of the PNM behind this hoax, they failed in their attempt to divert the national discourse.

It backfired, however, because the whole country was elated when they heard Hinds was gone and then the whole country was disappointed when they learned he was back or rather never left!

And this further solidified and confirmed the widespread disapproval of Keith Rowley and his government throughout the whole country, even among his own supporters.
