German government confirms further arms exports to Saudi Arabia

(MENAFN) The German government has authorized new military sales to Saudi Arabia, more than three years after it froze supplies to the Persian Gulf monarchy owing to Riyadh's war in Yemen and its complicity in the murder of dissident Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi

According to German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel and the DPA news agency, Germany's economy minister and vice chancellor, Robert Habeck, confirmed in a letter to the Bundestag (the German federal parliament) that several deals on arms exports had been approved by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz before his trip to the Persian Gulf region on energy hunt.

Based on the letter, the export licenses are part of a collaborative initiative with Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

Scholz returned from a trip to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Qatar, where he attempted to establish new energy ties with the Persian Gulf governments wealthy in oil and gas.

According to Der Spiegel, Riyadh will be authorized to spend €36 million ($35.2 million) on Eurofighter and Tornado jet equipment and ammunition.
