UN Secretary-General criticizes attack on troops in DRC

(MENAFN) Citing Xinhua, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly denounced Friday's attack on UN soldiers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which killed one Pakistani blue helmet.

"The secretary-general recalls that attacks against United Nations peacekeepers may constitute a war crime under international law. He calls on the Congolese authorities to investigate this incident and swiftly bring those responsible to justice," according to Stephane Dujarric, representative for Guterres, in a statement.

According to the statement, Guterres conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the family of the martyred peacekeeper, as well as to the government and people of Pakistan.

He emphasized that the UN will continue to help the Congolese government and people in their efforts to bring peace and stability to the country's east.

As stated in the statement, Twirwaneho militants were accused of carrying out the attack on a Company Operating Base of the UN peacekeeping force in the DRC in Minembwe, South Kivu province.

The Twirwaneho militia is one of more than 120 armed organizations operating in the turbulent eastern DRC.
