Swiss issues winter energy supply cautionary

(MENAFN) According to Thomas Grunwald, a spokesman for Switzerland's Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education, and Research (EAER), officials there may impose curbs on energy use the current winter.

He continued by saying that if there were power shortages, all institutions and enterprises would be required to adhere to a quota, “in general, the country’s Economic Supply Office, as well as the Federal Office for the Protection of the Population, rank power shortages … among the most serious risks for Switzerland.”

His remarks are similar to those made on Sunday by Werner Luginbuhl, the head of Switzerland's electricity regulator ElCom, who complained that electricity was being used "completely thoughtlessly" in an interview with the Swiss newspaper NZZ am Sonntag and advised citizens to stock up on candles and firewood in case the nation experiences power outages this coming winter.

He noted that citizens might do a lot if they were " were just a little more aware that electricity isn't always going to be a matter of course, we could achieve a lot " and that " The use of electrical devices in particular may be restricted or prohibited." He also mentioned that temporary curbs on energy consumption, particularly for large customers, are something that the authorities are thinking about doing to protect the supply of electricity.
