China calls US ambassador in response to Pelosi's travel to Taiwan

(MENAFN) China summoned the US ambassador to Beijing over US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, informing the envoy of the country's strong opposition to the extremely contentious visit.

According to China's Xinhua news agency, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng called US envoy Nicholas Burns on Tuesday after Pelosi's plane landed down at Taipei International Airport.

Under the "One China" policy, China has sovereignty over Taiwan. Almost every country in the world recognizes this sovereignty.

The US, too, recognizes Chinese sovereignty over the island, but has long courted Taipei in an effort to frighten Beijing.

Washington, which supports Chinese Taipei's separatist ruler, also continues to provide weaponry to the island nation, despite its stated position.

Xie called Pelosi's visit "playing with fire," and said, "The move is extremely egregious in nature and the consequences are extremely serious. China will not sit idly by."

According to him, the visit has a significant influence on the political underpinning of Sino-American ties and significantly violates China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
