In reaction to the Friday explosion in the west of Kabul, Richard Bennett, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, stated that the Taliban administration has a responsibility to protect the Afghan people's safety.
The“dreadful attack on civilians in crowded Hazara market W[est] Kabul, continuing pattern of crimes claimed by ISIS,” the UN senior official wrote on his Twitter handle on Friday.
He extended his sympathy to the victims' families and expressed his concern for them. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery.
He emphasized that the Taliban defense authorities are responsible for defending all Afghans and that those who commit international crimes should be brought to justice.
According to a tweet from the Taliban's senior spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, the explosion on Friday occurred in a wheelbarrow between civilians in Kabul's Police District 6,“martyring” 8 people and injuring another 18.
“Such actions are the work of those who detest our country, our religion, and who do not wish for its safety and happiness,” spokesperson Mujahid wrote.
According to Reuters, ISIS claimed responsibility for the strike in the west of Kabul, which left 20 people dead and injured.
According to local sources, the number of victims from the IS-K blast in western Kabul is higher.
This comes as Shia Afghans observe the religious period of mourning for Muharram month and Ashura; gathering for the practice in mass congregations.
