University students surrounded Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa's residence at Wijerama today and staged a protest.

The students were initially heading to Galle Face but diverted to Wijerama.

After reaching Wijerama the students confronted the Police and Special Task Force officers at Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa's residence and attempted to push down the barricade.

Subsequently the students staged a rally outside the gates of the Prime Minister's residence.

Speaking at the rally, Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) Convenor Wasantha Kumara Mudalige said that they came to Wijerama as barricades had been placed in Fort.

He also warned that if President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa do not step down then the public will force them out.

The students also said that breaking barriers is not a difficult task but that is not their intention.

Wasantha Kumara Mudalige said the recent protests has seen the President, Prime Minister and parliamentarians now being confined to“bunkers” fearing for their safety. (Colombo Gazette)
