The book fair is being organised by the Ministry of Culture, and represented by Qatar Cultural and Heritage Events (QCHEC). In a tweet, QCHEC said that the first-ever Ramadan Book Fair is an extension of the Doha International Book Fair (DIBF) which was conducted in January and ran for 10 days.
“The Ramadan Book Fair aims to localise books by encouraging readership, supporting Qatari publishers with book marketing and expanding readership,” it said on its Instagram post.
“Reading develops you cognitively, disciplines you morally, and reveals to you the knowledge of the world and its secrets,” it added.
On the first day, the fair will be from 8.30pm until midnight. The event will continue until April 16. QCHEC also revealed that there will be cultural events and various activities lined-up during the nine-day fair.
Jean Bahaynon who's a book lover told The Peninsula that she will definitely come and check out the books at the opening of the first Ramadan Book Fair. “The book fair's location is very convenient and can be accessible through Metro. I'm looking forward to local publications as I'm interested now on the history and cultural data of the country.”
Rocelle Toralba, a mother of three kids, said the book fair is a good avenue to expose her children to the world of reading and literature.
“My kids love reading books and the fair is a great channel to even more introduce them to the art of reading, plus there are cultural events that we are also anticipating.”
Compared to Doha International Book Fair, the Ramadan Book Fair will only run for nine days and will be held at Souq Waqif compared to DECC where the former was conducted.
Thirty- seven countries participated on the 31st DIBF, and the number of direct publishers reached 430 while the numbers of agencies at 90.
