17,000 nationals participate in Qatar Genome Program

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: Qatar Biobank, part of Qatar Foundation's Research, Development, and Innovation (QF-RDI) division, has announced the accomplishment of a lot of achievements by the end of 2020.

More than 26,000 participants, including over 20,000 Qataris, and 6,000 residents, who have been in Qatar for at least 15 years, have registered and donated the required samples to Qatar Biobank and among those Qatari participants, 17,000 have participated in Qatar Genome Program, which is generating whole genome sequencing and other omics data and integrating them with the comprehensive phenotypic data collected by the Qatar Biobank.

These participations have also been utilised in the Qchip project, that will be used in identifying patients and mutation carriers, by conducting genetic analysis in cooperation with Qatar Genome to facilitate the diagnostic process, especially for diseases that have a certain connection to genes.

The latest achievement by Qatar Biobank carried out in cooperation with the Ministry Of Public Health and Hamad Medical Corporation is a research project to collect biological samples and information from COVID-19 patients in Qatar in an organized manner and follow up with them every month to monitor the impact of the virus on their health and immunity.

This information is provided to researchers who work on data related to the complications and impact of Covid-19 on the human body and health, determining the reasons behind the variation of the impact from one patient to another and other relative information to this virus, which supports Qatar's fight against the virus and helps the development of precision medicine.

Qatar Biobank, part of QF-RDI, is a long-term health initiative that gathers biological samples and information on the health and lifestyle of Qataris and residents of Qatar for more than 15 years, to assist researchers, scientists and doctors in conducting health-related research and to help identify the latest discoveries in medical research and early diagnosis for various diseases in Qatar, which are reflected in the health of citizens and residents of future generations.
