Mexico is collecting money from drug lord's property

(MENAFN) A drug lord named Arturo Beltran Leyva, alias or as known as El Barbas, was killed by marines during a raid in the central Mexican city of Cuernavaca in December 2009.

The Luxury properties that belonged to him were auctioned on Sunday and the Mexico's Service for Asset Management and Disposal (SAE) said that they raised nearly 3 million U.S. dollars for government welfare programs.

According to a press release by the SAE, the Mexican government sold a third of some 27 properties put on auction such as houses with swimming pools, escape tunnels, luxury apartments, and raised USD 56.6 million.

Most of the collected money through the auction will be spent to reduce shortage in mountain communities in the southern state of Guerrero, which have been ravaged by drug trafficking violence and the rest will be used to fund anti-drug programs for youth, the SAE said that seized jewelry would be put on auction.
