Lithuania Presidential Hopefuls: Tone Down Russia Rhetoric


(MENAFN- Daily Outlook Afghanistan) VILNIUS,Lithuania – Lithuanians are choosing a new president in a runoff vote betweentwo candidates who both say they want to maintain a strict tone towardneighboring Russia while easing sometimes harsh rhetoric.
GitanasNauseda, a prominent economist, and Ingrida Simonyte, a former financeminister, are vying to succeed the popular Dalia Grybauskaite, who has calledRussia "a terrorist state."
Bothcandidates in this NATO member have said they won't go to Moscow and meetPresident Vladimir Putin unless Russia withdraws from Crimea, which it annexedfrom Ukraine in 2014.
Thatmove sparked fears that other former Soviet republics, including the Balticstates, could be next.
