Oman- Filmmaker turns hero, saves 2 from drowning

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- An expatriate man and his young daughter were saved by an Omani filmmaker from drowning near the Darbat falls in Taqah, Dhofar recently. The incident took place when an Oman TV crew was shooting for Ramadan programme.

Speaking toMuscat Daily, Omar al Mazroui, assistant TV programme director at the Public Authority for Radio and Television, said that he did not realise that the day would be full of surprises while filming for the programme. 'When I set out with my colleagues for shooting, I was the only one wearing shorts.

'As the shooting was on, I just dived into the lake to enjoy the cool waters. Just I had swam for some 12m I saw a man struggling to keep afloat and pointing towards something inside the lake.

'When I got closer, he pleaded to rescue his drowning daughter who was already about 3.5 to 4m inside water. So, I dived in and after some struggle pulled her up and swam to safety. She was unconscious when we reached ashore. My colleagues rushed in too.

'One of us pressed her chest to flush out the water. Finally after some 15 minutes, she regained consciousness.'

During this period, Mazroui realised that the girl's father had not been able to reach ashore. 'I jumped into the lake again to look for him. I found him struggling to swim. He was tired and weak. I somehow managed to pull him out as well. He was later taken to hospital. He has been discharged and fine now.'

Mazroui said that when he thinks of the incident 'it sends shivers down his spine'. 'I could not sleep for two nights. I thank God that I could be present there to save them.'

Following this incident, Mazroui has appealed to the authorities to put proper warning signs having do's and don'ts for swimmers. 'The location is so beautiful but people need to be careful. People need to know that if one stays in water for an hour or more, it makes one tired. You then struggle to swim. This has been the cause of death for many people. People must know when it is time to come out of water.'

He said it would be great if the authorities can post some observers or life-savers especially in the khareef season which is not far away. 'The lake is deep. Its depth should not be underestimated even for people who are good at swimming. My experience that day taught me to be cautious.'
