U.S powerful storm, heavy snow claim 3 lives


(MENAFN) A powerful storm has swept to sea after dropping up to 60 cm of snow on areas of the southeastern United States, claiming three lives in North Carolina and cutting power on 138,000.

School districts across North and South Carolina and Virginia have been closed on Monday and officials alerted that heavy snow and icy roads were disturbing rescue operations to hundreds of trapped motorists.

The US National Weather Service confirmed that Whitetop, Virginia has witnessed the heaviest snow accumulated in the Appalachian Mountains along the western end of the Virginia-North Carolina border.

Whitetop has been covered in 60 cm of snow, while Greensboro, North Carolina, had 41 cm and Durham, North Carolina, got 36 cm.
