Oman- Sultanate participates in ITU Telecom World 2018


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The sultanate, represented by the Information Technology Authority (ITA) and other organisations in the field of ICT, participated in the ITU Telecom World 2018, organised by the World Telecommunication Union from September 10 to 13 in Durban, South Africa.

The exhibition brings together governments, corporates and tech SMEs working to accelerate ICT innovation for social and economic development. ITU Telecom World 2018 features an exhibition of digital solutions, a forum for sharing knowledge and a networking hub for organizations, countries and individuals. Focusing on innovation for smarter digital development the forum addressed several topics including 5G, IoT, new regulatory approaches, AI, digital financial services, satellite connectivity, spectrum allocation, smart cities, innovative business models, digital literacy and universal connectivity.

The sultanate participation included a paper presentation on digital identity and its role in the sustainable development goals in general. Yahya bin Salim al Azri, director of the National Digital Certification Centre at ITA, reviewed the sultanate's experience in establishing an integrated system of national digital identity and the challenges that faced the implementation of the project.

Azri presented the paper in a panel discussion among a group of experts and specialists in digital identity from around the world. He addressed the sultanate success in linking the government electronic services to the national digital certification system, thus facilitating eServices for citizens and residents, in addition to highlighting its role in developing the economy, legislations and laws related to digital identity and signature. Azri also talked about the centre success in integration with the service providers (ROP, OmanTel, Ooredoo), in addition to talking about the digital identity role in raising citizens' confidence, providing secured transactions, reducing misuse and fraud and ensuring personal data confidentiality.
