UN, Iran discuss recent violence escalation in Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TEHRAN, Aug 28 (KUNA) -- UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura has voiced concern over the ongoing escalation of violence in Syria's northern towns of Al-Fu'ah and Kafriya in Idlib Governorate, Iranian media reported Monday.

The humanitarian situations in these two beseiged northern towns are "painful", de Mistura told reporters after meeting with Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari in Tehran, according to Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

Major political and military changes have taken place lately in the Syrian crisis, including the war against the so-called Islamic State (IS) and Al-Nusra Front, said the UN official.

The Syrian people are striving to end the ongoing armed confrontations between rebel groups in their country, he said, adding that he had some "good" and "beneficial" talks with Iranian officials regarding the Syrian crisis.

Iran is a key player and partner in several issues in the region, de Mistura said, adding that Tehran could also be influential in reaching a mutual understanding with the UN on the ongoing events in Syria.

Liberating the cities of Deir Al-Zour and Raqqa, northeastern Syria, from the Islamic State is an important and aspired goal to reach a political agreement that ends the Syrian crisis, said the UN official.

For his part, Jaberi said that no country can decide for the Syrian people and that they themselves should determine their destiny.

Iran's main concern is ending the tragic humanitarian crisis in the war-torn region, he said, adding that his country seeks to restore peace and security in Syria by preparing the ground for an agreement in the region.

The sixth round of Syria talks will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan in late September, Jaberi noted, adding that his country has made efforts in recent expert-level meetings on Syria in Turkey and Tehran to make the upcoming high level talks in Astana successful. (end) fz.ma
