Jordan welcomes UNSC resolution on terror financing


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) New York Dec. 18 (Petra) -- Jordan on Friday welcomed a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) strengthening legal measures against the financing of terrorist groups particularly the terrorist Daesh organization whose financial resources must by dried up.

Finance Minister Umar Malhas told a UNSC meeting on finance ministers level that heinous crimes perpetrated by terrorist organizations prove unequivocally that these groups seek to compromise the value of co-existence between nations.

The minister emphasized that Jordan has always called for drying up the financial resources of terrorist groups and deemed it a major underpinning of any holistic anti-terror effort underlining the need for an all-encompassing effort that entails the cooperation and participation at local regional and global levels.

He explained that terror groups such as Daesh secure financing through illegal oil trade trafficking of artifacts and ransoms let alone taxing local communities where they operate citing the lack of coordination as the reason for the success of terror groups in secure funding.

Malhas spoke about a number of steps which he said Jordan deems necessary to put and end of the financing of terrorist and extremist organizations. These measures include the activation of a 1999 international agreement to combat terror financing which all countries should endorse. He also said countries should make sure that their citizens or residents on their territory are not engaged in terror financing.

The minister highlighted a number of measures Jordan has taken to fight and eradicate terrorism and terrorism and said the Kingdom introduced more robust counter-terror legislation and stiffer penalties to those engaged in terrorist acts or help finance terrorism.

Furthermore Jordanian authorities stepped up border security and control to prevent any attempt to smuggle oil or artifacts by the terrorist Daesh group whether from Syria or Iraq Malhas noted. He added that local banks and financial institutions have been alerted about any suspicious financial transactions that might serve terror organizations. A SH
