Saudi Arabia Aims To Double Efforts In Rio Trio Declaration

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 21. Saudi Arabia is focused on enhancing the implementation of the Rio Trio Declaration, said Khaled bin Abdullah Al-Abdulkader, Director General of the National Center for Vegetative Cover of Saudi Arabia, Trend reports.

Speaking at a high-level dialogue on "Enhancing knowledge exchange between conventions to ensure the sustainability of ecosystems” on the Rio Trio Initiative (Colombia, Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia) at COP29, Al-Abdulkader spoke on the framework of the initiative.

"In the context of climate cooperation, we once again recognize the power of the interconnections between interdependent systems that can create resilience and strengthen cooperation. Just as ecosystems thrive in harmony, our actions must also be interconnected to achieve maximum impact. As the presidency of the sixteenth Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), we are committed to strengthening the necessary cooperation within the 'Rio Trio'. The Earth is the foundation for both biodiversity and climate action. Our task is to use this fundamental resource to support the synergies we urgently need to create. Acknowledging this responsibility, we have already taken steps to support the Synergies Agenda," he said.

The Director General reminded the audience that Saudi Arabia, together with Colombia and Azerbaijan, launched the "Rio Trio" Declaration in New York.

"The declaration calls on all stakeholders to align efforts for bilateral and multilateral cooperation and drive significant progress through enhanced synergies. We are committed to strengthening the implementation of the 'Rio Trio' Declaration. Special attention will be given to engaging non-state actors to support the action agenda. Together, we aim to achieve high-quality and effective results that will bring triple benefits for land, nature, and climate. This mission is ambitious, but with joint efforts, we can achieve what none of us could do alone," he added.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run until November 22, opened at the Baku Olympic Stadium on November 11.

The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for“Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
