BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 15. Azerbaijan will
provide financial support to enable participation from vulnerable
nations in the 29th conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United
Nations Framework convention on Climate Change, said Elman
Abdullayev, Azerbaijan's Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to
UNESCO at the 220th session of the UNESCO Executive Board, Trend reports.
He pointed out that there is a critical need to support small
island developing states (SIDS) in their pursuit of sustainable
development. According to Abdullayev, these nations face unique
challenges, including economic vulnerabilities and non-traditional
security threats, particularly the severe effects of climate
change.
"Small island developing states deserve special attention as
they navigate these distinct challenges," Abdullayev stated. He
reaffirmed Azerbaijan's commitment to working closely with SIDS on
sustainable development and international cooperation efforts.
Abdullayev further highlighted climate change as a defining
global challenge, disproportionately affecting low-income and
fragile nations. "Climate change is impacting livelihoods and
contributing to instability, which underscores the urgent need for
collective action," he remarked.
The ambassador further spoke about Azerbaijan's active role in
the global fight against climate change. This November, the country
will host the COP29. As the incoming presidency, Azerbaijan has
pledged to organize COP29 in a transparent, impartial, and
inclusive manner, focusing on bridging the gap between developed
and developing nations and ensuring the active participation of
vulnerable communities, particularly small island states.
To enhance inclusivity, Abdullayev announced that Azerbaijan
will provide financial support to enable participation from
vulnerable nations in COP29 and its preparatory meetings, ensuring
their voices are heard in the global climate dialogue.
